Reducing Sugar, Fat, and Salt Consumption

The U.S. federal government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans advocates consuming less sugar, less fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and less salt and sodium.  (They also state that if you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.)  This advice is much more easily offered than followed because consuming sugar and fat is fun.  Here are some resources to help you consume less sugar and fat, and possibly even try giving up sugar.   (You can consume less salt by consuming fewer processed foods and going easy on the salt shaker.)  I've also included some suggestions for other ways to relax or have fun instead of eating junk food.

Sugar Busters!: Cut Sugar to Trim Fat, by H. Leighton Steward (editor), Morrison C. Bethea, MD, Sam S. Andrews, MD, and Luis A. Balart, MD.  Sugar is America's most widely consumed drug, with Americans consuming an average of around
150 pounds of sugar per person each year.  This book suggests lowering (but not necessarily eliminating) sugar consumption in order to lose weight and improve your health.  It goes beyond simply advocating reducing sugar consumption to advocate a diet designed to minimize the body's insulin production.  Published in 1998.  Reviewed by Amazon.com.
Why not try giving up sugar for awhile and see if you feel better?
Note: I recognize that sugar (as well as dietary fat) is quite popular because it provides enjoyment and pleasure.  I'm definitely in favor of enjoyment and pleasure (within reasonable boundaries).  But I want to let people know about the health costs of dietary sugar and fat and let them know about healthy pleasures as well.  Then everyone can decide for themselves how much of what type of pleasure they want to enjoy or indulge in (being aware of both the joy and the cost of different types of pleasure).
Eating is also sometimes used as a form of stress controlExercise and stretching are just two of many alternative ways to relieve stress.

Lick the Sugar Habit, by Nancy Appleton.  Also available in a less expensive pocketbook edition.  This book focuses in detail on the negative health consequences of Americans consuming an average of around 150 pounds of sugar per year, while Sugar Busters! focuses more on a plan for reducing sugar consumption.  My personal recommendation would be to give up junk food altogether and focus on a healthy diet.  Reviewed by Amazon.com.

Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill: The Complete Guide to Fats, Oils, Cholesterol and Human Health, by Udo Eramus, is an exhaustive 456-page analysis of dietary fat and its effect upon human health.  Here are 2 quotes from the book: 1) "A large body of research indicates that if we want to remain healthier longer, we need to reduce our total fat consumption from over 40% down to between 15 and 20% of total calories." [page 403.]  2) "Our intake of EFAs [essential fatty acids] should be at least one-third of total fat intake, no matter what our total level of fat consumption is." [page 399.]
